The Tortured Ending

So yesterday i watched this film staring Jesse Metcalfe and Erika Christensen which was released in 2010, The Tortured.
So it wasn't the greatest film ive seen but the ending does seem to cause allot of confusion and speculation in fact the minute the movie ended i hit google! But i didn't really find many good answers, after a little thought i think i may have a good idea of what happened.

Ok a quick plot summery for anyone who has not seen the film.
Happily married couple have a six year old son called Benjamin who is kidnapped right from his front yard by a sadistic serial child murderer Kozlowski, of course the boy ends up being found dead in this killers basement.
At the trial it is revealed that there were various bodies/bones found buried in his back yard yet he is only sentenced to 25 years in prison. The mother who is obviously furious tells her husband she want him to help her kill this murder he says no, they split, skip ahead a couple months and the father comes around to the idea. They watch as the killer is being transfered outside the prison follow the van and manage to get laxatives into the guards coffees (medicine they acquired due to the husband being a doctor) they obviously stop the husband hops in the van, with the wife following in the car, the husband loses control and flips the van over a bridge he is surprisingly ok (yeah one of those films) but the prisoner was thrown out the back of the van and is unconscious. They end up in an old house in the middle of know where, which is where 'plan revenge' begins to take place. After some disturbing shit like soldering irons being held on his chest and stomach, being used as an ash tray, then being injected with something that causes all of his muscles to spasm at once (original) then one of the worst for me being injected into his ear drum with something awful. Then the image on the cover they use an old gas mask to temporarily suffocate him because that is how he killed their son, during this he goes too far and ends up having to be resuscitated. Throughout all of this being injected with something to keep him conscious the entire time.

OK here is where the problems start they pull out the breathing tube they had down his throat, which is when he tries to plea with them, telling them he had no idea who they where and even no idea who he was and that all he could remember was a car crash. Now conflicted on what they should do and how they should feel about torturing a man that had no clue what he had done, they decide it doesn't matter its still the same man. For some reason they are insanely driven to have the man say their sons name and to persuade him, they pop his foot in a vice and almost crush it as thin as a pop tart! Which has him scream out benjamin (though this really doesn't make sense because he heard them say the boys name earlier when he was suffocating him so he was going to know his name whether he knew the child or not) which they take as a sign that he remembers. Any way he escapes and for some random ass reason he goes upstairs?? Is obviously knocked out, but as being carried back to his basement of pain he wakes up freaking out the wife in turn making the husband fall down the basement stairs and letting the killer get away. while all this is happening the police and u.s marshals are homing in on the house, obviously looking for the escaped criminal. As the killer escapes the police are seen capturing a convict in an orange jump suit, which turns out to be Kozlowski the convicted child killer. Which is where the TWIST of the movie is kinda explained, what the couple had not seen was another prisoner being transported with the murder an average joe sorta fella who had been convicted for some fraud, and of course that was who they had been torturing, when the van crashed Kozlowski had escaped with just a gash in his leg. So back to the story, the couple are searching for the guy they had been torturing and they find him the moment he jumps of a chair in an abandoned shed with a rope around his neck, but the most confusing part for people is the fact he had a note in his hand (when did he have the time to write that?) which said he was sorry for what he had done and he was a bad person who may have deserved what they had done to him. WTF!? Right, so my conclusion is this poor fraudster who had lost his memory and all he knew was these people telling him he had murdered their child and punishing him for it had no choice but to believe them and the only thing he could do was apologize for it and kill himself. And as far as i could tell the couple never found out they had tortured the wrong man. So yeah pretty much a half assed explanation of the twist from the film makers but yeah that was my idea.

  1. Your explanation clears it up for me. That is absolutely devastating.

The couple will find out that they tortured the wrong man when they learn that their son's perp is still in prison. They will learn of this news as soon as they get home and turn on the tv, or as soon as the officer tells the that the perp has been re-captured; what happens after that should be far more interesting. It is so sad to think they tortured the wrong man; especially considering it was kind of sad when I thought they were torturing the right man!

This movie inspires some things to consider: the morality of torture; information threshold and action (don't take for granted your inferences, which are made even at the stage of mere observation); the essence of a person (our nutty protagonists, if you will, seem to think a person's essence is in his physical body and not his mind, and continue to torture the supposed perp despite his possibly having no memory); the nature of revenge when a deed is irreversible; how and when to allocate blame; the diminishing returns nature and futility of excessive punishment; among others I am sure. So this movie, as torturous as it was to watch, need not have been watched in vain; we can take some things away from it for our consideration.

    7. How many of you actually watched the movie? They made it very clear the child murder got away. At one point he was outside the house. They did in fact show the tax evasionist writing the note very briefly. The tax evasionist thought he really did kill those people's kid because he really had amnesia from the wreck. They convinced him he did it because they were so sure it was him! The only thing they screwed up on was when she knocked him out from in the bathroom he didn't have the note in his hand but had already written it. The original person who wrote this did pretty good. However I am blown away that he used resuscitated, but spelled a lot allot and used know instead of know. Lol. Not trying to be grammar police it was just funny. Otherwise you did pretty good. For the rest of you who are totally confused about the twist...they tortured the wrong guy! That's a fact. It doesn't matter how many of your own details you try to throw in. Watch the movie again ya thick cheeky blokes!

But you are correct also if you look at the shirts the man they were torturing had blood all around the neck the man that was caught again by the police the actual child murderer had blood in different places on his shirt if you look you can notice it in several scenes . This explanation helps me a lot because I was very confused and I just now watched the film oh crap I just realized that when you talk to text AutoCorrect is not put a lot Allot . )/ ha ha .

    10. Who in the fuck is the anonymous left wing liberal asshole above that said above "it was kind of sad when I thought they were torturing the right man"? If you actually have one bit of pity for a child murdering monster then i pity you. The Tortured is a descent movie but it has far too many plot holes, the main one being the addition of the 2nd criminal. I mean the couple was there at the prison doing their recon. How could they have missed another guy being loaded in the van? What did the guards do put that guy in the night before? Also it ends far to early as when the couple do discover they grabbed the wrong guy and the monster is still sucking air, that is when the real torture would begin.

    11. The cops caught Kozlowski; he only had dirt in his shirt. No bloodied chest. No bloodied head. The man who hanged himself was the man they tortured because you could see all the injuries they inflicted on him when he killed himself. Whomever said they got it backwards clearly did not pay attention. The cops caught a guy with no head wounds, no chest wounds, nothing...just dirt on his shirt. They didn’t capture the guy the couple had tortured!

  2. I did the same thing you did after rewinding the ending and watching it again! I was like WTF and then figured it out. Probably a halfassed attempt to raise the plot above a mere torture for revenge scenario. Worked slightly, now I have something to talk to my daughter about who is a real Bill Mosely fan.

  3. I find a flaw in this movie because even though the guy who got tortured was in a car accident, his face was still perfectly recognizable! I even noticed how it wasen't the right guy. The couple musted been blinded by anger. Overall good plot

  4. The ending(even though still imperfectly executed) saved this movie from being kinda trashy. It left it with a message you could take into the real world which I appreciate.
I have a theory that revenge is an altruistic emotion, much like love, in that it costs dearly the person seeking it, and benefits society, but eventually , not immediately like love. Justice is about tempering revenge from one or a few people so that everyone bears some of the weight on their behalf. Choosing to forego that protection (when it's there) will always be costly, if even in the moment it seems like revenge is the best course of action

    ReplyDelete

    1. "Justice is about tempering revenge"... Fuck you, in real life people like this monster portrayed in the movie deserve everything the tortured guy got and more. Justice is a business and they don't want death penalties because then they lose their annual revenue from that prisoner (which cost the tax payers a staggering 30k to 60k depending on state) & that is per prisoner annually. You think it really cost that much per prisoner or do you think there are some politicians and prison officials lining their pockets with excess funds? I mean do think that even they want to rehabilitate piece of shit child predators? Are you fucking insane? Truth be told this movie should serve a blueprint for these bastards and the parents of the victims should be given the option to torture the fuckers at the minimum they should suffer the same fate as their victims. Could you imagine how much that would reduce crimes against children if the predators knew this is what awaited them? Fuck kidnappers, child murderers and pedophiles, I could watch them suffer everything from this movie all while eating a bucket of popcorn and then sleep like a fucking baby.

  5. I agree, I rewinded the ending so confused of why he had the letter but now it makes sense that he thought he did it BC if the memory lost. He wrote the letter when he came up from the basement and was standing in the other room. Before entering the bedroom.

  6. The irony - The husband and wife asking the man that they were torturing something along the lines of what kind of sick pervert derives pleasure from causing another person such pain. The big twist - The husband and wife, although seeking revenge, became the very type of people whom they despised! Their actions caused them to not only torture another human being, but in the process, they became tortured.

    1. They had the right guy. He knew the sons name, Benjamin. Even if you argue that the killer may have told the tax evader the child's name that part was never in the movie. So this is my take on the ending. The cops were told of one escape convict in a cabin. The suspense is that the cops were on their way. The parents had very little time until they showed up. As the cops capture the tax evader they assume that's the one convict reported and unrealistically end the man hunt. Then the parents discover the just escaped tortured killer in the shed who confesses and he offs himself. The note was unrealistic and unneeded and he didn't have the time, paper and pen to write it as well. They bury him so no one would be the wiser. This movie was a sloppily done and the confusion was inevitable. I rate it 2 stars out of 5.

    2. You're incredibly wrong, and the person who wrote te post is correct. They tortured the wrong guy who actually had amnesia.

    3. There is absolutely NO DOUBT that they tortured the WRONG guy. I just watched the movie and rewound it 10 times, paused scenes, and compared faces. First of all, he definitely wrote the note when he came upstairs. Right before she hit him with the pipe, you could see the note in his hand. Second of all, the news clip said that authorities have BEGUN an extensive manhunt. This was obviously shot before they captured the real Koslowski. You guys are all reading into things that don't exist. She said she just needed someone to blame. That was WAY before they kidnapped the guy. How the hell could she have known they were going to get the wrong guy? If that had thought that, A, they would have said on the accident scene, "this isn't him" or "where the hell is he". Bottom line, they tortured the WRONG MAN!!!!

      Delete
    4. Yep, they tortured the wrong guy. The other confusing thing is that the police knew there were two convicts in the van yet they seemed to call off the search after finding just one. There would have been a possibility that both convicts were in the area.

      Delete
  8. They definitely had the right man. They just wanted to confuse us and make us wonder if they did or not. The news reporter said Kozlowski was still on the run, so that means they caught the tax evader, and Kozlowski was actually dead and buried.

    2. No. They definitely had the wrong man, and the wrong man had amnesia.

      Delete
    3. The news reporter saying that Kozlowski was still on the run makes me think they torchered the right guy. Unless, the plot thickens, and Kozlowski switches identities with the fraudster after seeing him torchered.

      Delete
    4. OK seriously? The reporter saying that he's on the run is a report from right after the police find the van. The tax evader (wrong guy) that they are torturing, hears the father sag the child's name when the mom is puking. They make it clear in the recap/flashback scene at the end...they actually put those two flashbacks right next to each other for clarity (which took rewinding and analysis to find so that obviously didn't make it clear enough). They actually show the tax evader writing the note at a table at the top of the stairs (his back is turned but you can hear writing and the tearing of the paper) but the real flaw is when he walks out the front door the note is no longer in his hand. Anyway, they most definitely tortured the wrong guy. The ending would have been much more satisfying if they had shown the couple finding out that they had tortured the wrong man...which they should have figured out before the torturing ever began, seeing as you would never forget the face of your child's killer...banged up or not. The whole time I was watching all I could think is why would they use a different actor for the torture scenes. I know what Bill Mosley looks like, and that was not him! Not a bad story, but very shitty execution.

    5. Geez they tortured the wrong guy. I don't understand you all that are saying it was the right guy. It's so clear, they don't explain very well, but enough to know what happened. The marshalls caught kowsloski in the woods. It even showed him looking through the basement window at the tax evader

    6. no they had the wrong man....the one that hung himself had a bandage round his right leg..which was the child killer...his note referred to what he had watched through a window..not even he cud handle it...theres yor twist

    7. The best part is.... when they first started to torture him, (Maybe second or third thing) They injected his ear with something to deafen him and painfully explode his ear drums. Yet they go right along talking to him and he clearly hears them and reacts to their words. You cant explode the mans ears, Then spend the rest of the movie showing him react to their words even answering questions later.

      Delete
    8. That's exactly what I thought when I watched it.. I'm like umm hey guys you just ruptured his eardrum , why in the heck are you still talking to him?

    9. The bandage on his leg is different than the killer's. The guy had a bandage on his leg because the wife stabbed him. They show it during one of the flashbacks.

  9. Even immediately after they realized their son was murdered, as they were arguing after he pulled the drawer full off junk out, she said "I'm sorry but I just feel I have to blame someone." That to me means she had a strong idea it wasn't the right man they were torturing. She just needed to take it out on somebody.

    1. That happened way before they even decided to kidnap the guy! She is talking about blaming the husband...why she can't just blame the guy that did it I don't know! The dialog was pretty shitty at times.

I look for other features as well such is browS or possibly ears. of course I did all this with the sSlowest motion I can get and lots of Pausing overall I like the movie but don't worry a lot of questions that I had afterward. 11. They tortured the wrong guy.

In the flashback sequence, immediately after the crash, as Elise and Craig lean over the unconscious bloody body of who they think is Kozslowski, you can clearly see the real Kozslowski escape from the back of the van.

Earlier when Craig steals the van, he looks through the hatch at Kozslowski, at that angle he can't see the other prisoner "Patrick Galligan" that we later learn was also in the back of the van.

They take "Galligan" back to the cabin and torture him, the fact that he has memory loss is pivotal to the story, if he didn't, as soon as he was ungagged he would have said.

"Hey my name is Patrick Galligan, I've been convicted of fraud and tax evasion, why are you doing this to me"

But as he genuinely has amnesia, he wakes up in prison uniform, strapped to a table being told by 2 people that he is a child killer and a monster, so he starts to believe them.

During the early torture Craig & Elise argue and mention Benjamin's name, so when he is later tortured and demanded to say the name, of course he knows it.

He may obviously have known it beforehand as he was being transported in the van along with Kozswlowski and he was probably aware of the case, but that, along with his identity was forgotten due to the amnesia.

We then see Kozslowski actually look into the window and he sees Galligan gagged and tethered to the table before stumbling away setting off the car alarm in the process.

When Galligan manages to escape, as soon as he comes up the basement stairs he turns right, and you can see him (and hear him) writing the note he is later found with shortly after.

He doesn't try to harm Craig even though he can see him helpless in bed, this is because he feels he believes he murdered their son so their hatred towards him is justified and doesn't have any reason to harm them further.

He only retaliates when attacked, by Elise and escapes outside but only to kill himself in his own terms. Allowing the couple to read his hastily written note.

We then see the police capture the real Kozslowski which is when we realise they've tortured the wrong person and caused his death.

The couple then drive off home "content" as the feel justice has been done.

Yes, they will get a huge shock when the detective calls them with the good news that Kozslowski has been caught, when they find out that Galligan is still unaccounted for they will realise what they have done.

The film does make it clear that the couple wanted someone to blame, and they may have had doubts when they questioned wether it was right to punish "Kozslowski" when he genuinely seemed to have lost his memory, but the fact they were willing to "torture" some evidence out of him shows what their mindset was.

Any doubts they had would have been out to rest when he later seemed to confess and hang himself.

The fact that the guy that found them in the cabin, later also directed the police to the real location of Kozslowski is what I believe has confused some people about this film.

How people can still think they had the right guy all along astounds me

  12. Its half a smart idea, but the fact they was in the court room with the man that killed their son you would never forget that face. Plus the whole idea of an average joe nobody getting escorted with a sick child killer is a bit weird. And at the end it leaves the protagonists who you root for being two dickheads who tortured some guy for something he didnt even do I think he was in prison for tax evasion. I agree that the film touches upon morality of torture and ethics, but I feel it was a bit of a fuck you to the audience, Like the guy kills kids only gets 25 years and avoids being tortured. 15. They tortured the right person. The news people said that the child killer was still on the run. The killer really lost his memory during the crash. He only knew what he was being tortured for because they told him. He felt what he did was an abomination and that he deserved to die. He got himself loose and came upstairs to write the apology note. He wanted to die but as he said but he was a coward and could not stand to be tortured anymore so he killed his self before they could. The tax evader saw the child killer being tortured but did nothing to help him. I guess he figured the killer got what he deserved. The tax evader was caught and reprisoned. The child killer was buried so that it would be believed that he died due to the elements. The parents felt that justice had finally been served.

I did most of there electrical needs, .. So yeah they actually tortured the tax evader who lost is memory he only knew there sons name bc he heard it from them first. And he started believing that he did kill their son bc he was wearing prison clothes and all that. At the end the us Marshall's catch the real killer and that shows the viewer that they torturedc and innocent man. The couple don't realize it yet that they tortured the wrong person but they will and that's gonna make them go crazy .. Anyways the movie could of been better , good plot but could have better ten times better ..

If they did NOT torture the wrong guy, then why even have a "Patrick Galligan" to begin with? Why not just have 1 prisoner that they torture and bury? What logical reason is there to have "Galligan"? BUT BUT BUT, HERE is the number 1 reason that PROVES they had the WRONG guy, go to http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1017464/fullcredits?ref_=tt_cl_sm#cast and look at the billing for the movie. Galligan's character comes BEFORE Kozlowski's. Why? Because HE is in the movie way more than Kozlowski. Any doubt?

    6. People. You can watch rewatch the ending. Its so clear they had the wrong person. Everyone talking about the bandage, if you go and look at the bandage Kablo-orwhatever’s(child killer) was long and wrapped cleanly with what I believe to be gauze. The other guy g-somethin (the guy they were torturing, tax fraud) looked like a shirt or something was tightly knoted and looks nothing like the other K-guy. And if you go to the court room scene, the man the police arrest again is CLEARLY the same guy. And the most obvious part which I dont understand how its not clear is that the man who hung himself with the note was clearly the man the couple tortured because of the blood on his face, his shirt, and his bruised eyes. How could the guy the police arrested possibly be the guy they tortured when his face was perfectly in tact. Where did he have time to clean it?? How did he remove bruises on his eyes?? It is so obvious I dont get how there’s a mix up here. And when they were saying the child killer was still on the loose they were saying that after they found the car accident. There is no argument for the other way around.

    1. Completely agree haha. Some people just want to sound intelligent by coming up with their own little theories about the plot, not realizing that the film is actually black and white; despite everything else, all you have to do is look at their damn faces to realize they have the wrong person. Hence why the wrong guy had blood and bruises covering his face for the whole film, so the audience wouldn't realize it's the wrong guy until the end.

      Delete
  17. Wow. I havent even seen the movie and it sounds viscerally disturbing. Has an almost Poe-like way of confusing the reader/veiwer by making them root for the protaginist only to find they are equally villianous. Unfortunately it sounds like they added too much cheese to the mix, as most films do anymore.

  18. The ONLY thing that I had to do...which only took a few seconds...was rewind a bit, to clearly view the face of the captured man in the woods, making sure there hadn't been a third dude in the van. The man who hung himself was clearly not the child killer. We all saw his face.

Up to that point, I had assumed that the search would end when the runaway killer was apprehended, allowing the couple to get out of dodge...going off into the sunset, taking with them some significant thoughts to ponder about the ethics of revenge, involving its possible inability to heal pain, as well as potential harm to the soul of the avenger. Happy ending. Lesson learned, and able to move on with their grieving, without having actually killed him. Well, he WOULD need a liver transplant, lickety split. Hee hee.

The news story about killer dude being off in the woods was just a flashback to a point before he was caught. We saw killer dude's FACE look in basement window. We simply weren't shown mention of both escaped convicts, because killer dude was the biggest "news" in the story, and it was part of the lead into revealing, to the audience, what had happened.

The car alarm tease seemed to have been cleared up when rifleman visited. That was SO obvious...without any subtlety...of an explanation to follow.

Everything else is clear. The guy had amnesia, he heard the parents mention the kid's name, and he gave the correct name because torture WORKS!!!! In his condition...not knowing who he was, what he had done, in a jail outfit, assuming the parents were correct (after all, THEY knew what he clearly didn't know), why would it occur to him to defend himself, without a reference memory point, or be clever enough to give a wrong boy's name to convince them he had amnesia?. He didn't know there was "another guy". Remember, torture works, and mom wanted the name. He truly was a blank slate, unable to defend with anything but what he had, "I don't remember anything".

And, NO, the couple did not yet know, when the movie ended, what they had done.

    Lame movie.

It's lawyer pleads Not Guilty...daddy cuts t-shirt shirt up middle..neither one at end has cut shirt..torturing him.."What's his name?..fraud guy takes lot of torture then says his name (Ben) ..why not quicker.? Forget the amnesia...daddy said "it's possible! So convicted K. Was wrongly convicted..and (Hitchcock like ending) fraud guy really did serial killing too...lawyer said plead "not guilty" as everyone does of course..but this put in the movie for us. Then the fraud guys note..only problem is that psychopaths don't apologise !! But for the movie could the just include it..hooing we wouldn't think that way ? (Hoping)

  23. Enjoyed reading all this as I ran to google right after I finished watching this. I wish they'd ended it with the couple waking up at home the next morning, feeling generally self satisfied with themselves only to turn on the news to find out they had the wrong guy. Watching their reactions would've been pretty cool.

  34. There's no two ways about it; they had the wrong guy. Basically, the tax evader had flashbacks, hence how he knew their child's name. However, due to memory loss from the accident he couldn't remember anything else; all he knew was that he was a convict in a convicts uniform being tortured and told he has murdered a child, therefor he has no real choice other than to believe it, hence why he writes an apology note. Also for those of you saying he didn't have time to write the note, you SEE him write it in their bedroom moments before the wife knocks him down with a piece of pipe, and he has the note in his hand there and then.

ALSO, for those of you saying they had the right guy the whole time, did any of you actually pay attention to faces in this movie? When the police capture the guy who killed their child at the end on the run, you SEE his face and see that it is him. The film also shows you the right guy wandering through the woods while the wrong guy is getting tortured; it's even him that sets the car alarm off.

The fact of the matter is that this film is not open for interpretation; the ending is what is VERY CLEARLY SHOWN. They have the wrong guy, and he only believes he is the right guy because he has no memory and all he has to go on is what he is being told. It proves that he isn't a bad guy at heart when, despite memory loss, he kills himself when he is led to believe he is a child murderer. The the other guy was pure evil and, memory loss or no memory loss, wouldn't have given a shit and wouldn't have felt any remorse for killing their child.

  36. What sucked about the ending was that YES they tortured the wrong guy, but due to his amnesia he confesses to that crime. So the parents feel justified - they did what even the (wrong) murderer thought was right. And the RIGHT guy well... he walks away - yeah to a prison but that's much better than the torturechamber. So no one is any wiser, no lesson learned, no shock to the parents about the wrongfull torture, no "realizing-how-horrific-man-can-be-to-another-man" - just satisfaction from to vengeage. Well of course the viewer can get these points, feel the chills, be sorry for the wrong guy et cetera, but since there is no characters allowed to realize this, the movie ends without an ending - everyone is happy and everyone is a bad person. No morale, no lessons. The twist is wasted this way, it's like "ok there is a twist, but so freakin' what?" Every single other movie with a twist at the end let's the character react to that - look at SAW or The Sixth sense. That's where you get the satisfaction as a viewer, not from the possibility that "well maybe Bruce Willis realized later on he was dead" or "maybe they realized later that the murderer was all the time right on the floor". This is just a way to end a movie badly.

  38. An overall ok movie with a twist in the end..And after much deliberation (and rewinding a couple of times) I also came to the conclusion that they had the wrong guy. And its not rocket science, why else introduce the tax evasion character towards the end? if not to emphasize the fact that there were two prisoners in the prison van. And the murderer is clearly seen being arrested.

Ok so i get the part that they tortured the wrong man and very upset that the movie didnt show a part where they find out it was the wrong man they tortured it would have been nice to see that but what i really want to know how the heck did the real killer end up still there you would of thought that sense he is free he would have took off from that area he happened to still be in that area and get caught im so confused someone please explain 2 me

Real life things happen like this to kids alot threw out the world and its sad that someone with no morals dont give of shit what they are doing to innocent kids/adults thats pretty sick of some one to do also it doesnt solve your problem by killing or torturing the person that did wrong that makes you just as bad as them by doing that doesnt bring back your love one they are dead and not coming back and im sure they wouldnt want you to kill or torture their killer the same way what happened to them my ponit is you end up being a bad guy after you are mad at someone for doing something like that then turn around and want to do the same doesnt make you a good person either

  47. I normally don't have time to respond to things like this, but this time I feel compelled. Megan, kudos to you for starting a blog at nineteen. Please work a little harder on grammar and punctuation. I am not being rude, but some of your run on sentences are difficult to read. As for all the comments, and I admit, I did not read them all: many of them were inaccurate. First of all, they did not have the right man. That is an absolute fact. The movie clearly shows the pedophile/murderer escaping, while they are grabbing the man convicted of tax fraud. It also show the murderer being caught by police. The part where he can't remember is actually more important than people realize. Good books and movies need an important conflict. The conflict on whether to torture a man who cannot recall what he did, is also about whether to torture a man at all. The BIG message is "do NOT take the law into your own hands." In this case, they made a horrible mistake and not only tortured the wrong man, but convinced a non violent man that he HAD tortured their child and although he was to serve eighteen months in prison for fraud, he is tortured believing he had tortured a child. He then ultimately commits suicide on the grounds that he deserves to die.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Isn't that a hoot. We all rewind, then reach for goggle. After reading a number of these, I believe that they grabbed the wrong guy...he had amnesia, and just believed what they were telling him - that he did these horrible things to children. They used their sons name while torturing him, so he knew it was "Benjamin". He wrote the note when he escaped and is in the house, with his back turned to us. Listen for him writing and tearing the note. Then he had the note in his hand, then probably put it in his prison jump suit. So he killed himself thinking he was that terrible child killer. Warning....tax evasion might just turn out to be the death of you! PS: They never would have stopped the search for the 2nd inmate. Michelle

    1. LOL! My first thought was exactly that, tax evasion can get you killed!

Going back to the movie, it really would have been pointless if they had the right guy in the first place, there needed to be a twist, something to make you think and feel bad for the wrong guy. The movie could have been much better though. They could have gotten an actor that looked like the murderer in the first place; even with the wounds and blood on his face, the tortured guy did not resemble the killer. Also, they should have provided a proper ending with the couple's reaction to finding out they had the wrong guy all along.

  55. The tax evader that WAS the one being tortured knew they were going to continue torturing him. Hence him talking his own life. Since he wasn't arrested for a violent crime, he most likely had a family and was a decent guy. He put himself in their shoes and figured if these people were distraught enough to torture a person they would have gone over the edge once they found out they tortured the wrong person. That's why I believe he let them think he was the actual killer.
They wouldn't have found out the other guy was captured since they thought he was dead. No one would have notified them and I'm sure the cops wouldn't be letting news out that their transport drivers were so lame to get their vehicle stolen.

    ReplyDelete
  56. There was a flashback of the news coverage. It was already widely known that the convicts had escaped. Since Kozslowski was a serial murderer, I'm pretty sure it would have been a terrible idea not to warn people that he had escaped. The news had been covering the escape the entire time, but since the couple was preoccupied and isolated in the cabin with the "tax guy", they didn't see the news. It is speculated that they will see the news when they return home. Not only will they feel bad that they tortured the wrong guy, but they will still have no peace since their child's murderer is still alive. Don't you guys get it? The couple are the "tortured" ones!

  57. Okay so the ending of this movie left me very upset .. first of all both of the parents are hypocrites...saying oh you're a monster you did this and you did that and then they went and did the exact same thing ..Also no matter how bad the accident had the man battered up how can you not recognize the face of the man who murdered your child ? I mean after all the time in the court room looking at him and seeing his face all in the news..it just doesn't make sense..Even I was saying soon as they got him ...they have the wrong man
..Then the part that really made me mad was when the man said he didn't remember a thing yet they still continued to torture the man like wtf...I was highly upset this man took his life because he thought he had murdered the couples son and by him losing his memory in the accident he couldn't do anything but belive what they were telling him was true ..they should've showed the parents finding out they killed the wrong man ...better yet they should've shown the parents going to jail ... and the fact that the police didn't keep looking once they found the serial killer pissed me off even more ..like you knew there was more than one person on the loose ...but I still can't get over the fact that the man endured that torture and pain and killed himself all because those dumass parents ..like those two men looked nothing alike ...and guess what the man who murdered their child who they said jail wasn't good enough well guess what he's still going to jail and you wasted your time torturing the wrong fucking man ... wanna know how they could live with that when they find out what they did ...

  59. They tortured the wrong guy. The couple tortured the tax evader, not the child killer. Its simple. By the way they captured the child killer, and they most likely got away. +They have another chance to torture the dude later.

  61. The tax evader was the kidnapper and the killer. They arrested and convicted the wrong guy. The tax evader was probably the neighbor who complained about hearing cries coming from the basement (which was questionable to me because who hears noises from another person's basement). Also, the real kidnapper (the tax evader) and the convicted man looked nothing alike. IMO, fate intervened and Benjamin's real killer got his just desserts. The torture worked in that he (the tax evader, kidnapper, and killer), for the first time in his life, felt remorseful. That's why he left the note (an innocent person would not have done that), could only stare at her (before walking out the front door), and didn't try to get away. He knew that he was an abomination. He knew that he was a coward. He knew that he would continue to kill boys once he was released from prison (that's why his sentence was made known to us).

    ReplyDelete
  62. Was the ending supposed to make me feel anger towards the main characters, in wanting revenge for the tax evader? Is this, then, supposed to say that there is a potential "monster within all of us"--the audience? I mean, many of us have read Joseph Conrad or other writers of this theme....

I think I'm more disturbed by the ambiguity of the ending. We start this film with two distraught people who have lost their child, which shows that life isn't fair. In their need for revenge, theses people bring misery to a man who did not deserve it.

There seems to be an odd attempt to make the the parents comparable to the child murderer. Or possibly, the film is trying to say that one should not take revenge, and that such an act is God's choice--as it was His to allow their child to die.

Really, these losse ironies just leave me frustrated in that there is no justice in the film. In the end, the protagonists just look like idiot--who finally had sex once they started to torture someone after the frustration of loosing their child.

I get the feeling that the creators of this story wanted it to be more than an exploitation film, but failed in the process.

    ReplyDelete
  63. I just see this movie and this is my own opinion. They had the wrong guy all the time. You can clearly see their faces are different.

The creators of this movie want that viewers belive they have the right guy when in fact this is not true. That's why the creators and those who write this movie had made the tortured guy face covered in blood all the time, so we cannot realize is the wrong guy.

Like someone above said, the guy had amnesia and memory loss and at some sort of point, he heard the child name. The child parents wanted him to admit what he did and because of all the pain he had to go through, all the ,, you kill our child " and his amnesia.. all of this make him said his name : Benjamin.

If you people pay attention to the movie, the guy even wrrite a note to appologize, which make him a good guy. The real killer is a psychopath and a real psychopath dosen't feel anything about being sorry, as this kind of people have mental ill which dosen't makes them feel what a normal person would feel. This leave us with a clear answer for all : They torture the wrong guy.

The producers of the movie cleary want the audience to belive something else and when the movie ends, they leave the audience with a question : Tortured 2 will appear ? I guess this was the thought of the producers when they create the movie... however, it could have been a better scrren wrriting... lots of dialogs without any reasons... she felt the need to blame someone ? Really ? I think the screen writters could have put much more efforts into the screenplay, but i guess they wanted to concentrate of torturing scene more than anything... Nice movie to watch if you really like this kimd of genre...
